Day 2 (2/18): Prayer
Day 2: Prayer
Scripture Reading: Psalm 51:6-9
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.
Yesterday, I wrote about saying “yes” to God, but I would be the first to ask, “How do I know what He’s saying?” In my heart, I know the answer to that is prayer (one of three common Lenten practices: pray, fast, give) Prayer is two-way communication between us and God that is possible because of a relationship – like a child with a father. As we know from our flawed earthly relationships, good communication takes time and practice. Similarly, regular communication with God through Scripture, worship, circumstances and prayer teaches us His wisdom (Ps. 51:6).
I have never heard God speak audibly, and His answers aren’t necessarily immediate or crystal clear. Honestly, my prayers are rather one-sided, and I am easily distracted. But I know He is ALWAYS listening (Ps. 66:19). And when I do spend time in prayer, my perspective is transformed.
I encourage you to take time to practice prayerful communication with Jesus during this Lenten season. Here are a few suggestions that I have tried – maybe one will work for you.
–on my knees –out loud –journal
–ACTS format –use a Psalm –sing
–prayer prompts –sentence starters
Prayer: Thank you, God, for inviting me to talk to you and for always listening. Lead and guide me to follow your will. Amen.
